The paper reviews the process and the features of the economic development in the central region of China and its strategic role in the national economy, analyzes the underdevelopment, the serious deviation between output and employment structures of industries and the lack of organic links within the region itself in the course of economic development in the central region, and comes up with the positioning, priorities and channels for the development strategy of the region and the appropriate measures to be taken.
