Push Ahead with the Transformation of China’s High Education: From Scale Expansion to High- Quality Development (No.136, 2018)

Abstract: Since the turn of the new century, China’s higher education has entered a period of fast development: the number of universities and colleges, the enrollment ratio, and the number of students in school have all witnessed a fast increase; besides, the quality of China’s labor force has kept improving, which has provided a sound support for China’s social and economic development. Since the 18th CPC National Congress, the Central Government has put forward the new requirement on pushing ahead with the connotative development of China’s higher education. With the support of relevant policies, the nationwide higher education has registered further development, its teaching quality as well as discipline construction have been enhanced notably, its coordination with social and economic development has been promoted and the balance in the supply of education resources has been improved to some extent. In the future, to push forward the transformation of higher education to a new high, work should be done to accelerate the construction of world-class universities and top disciplines, push ahead with the structural optimization of universities and colleges. Efforts should be made to promote the quality of talent cultivation for higher education and teaching as well as scientific research in line with the demand arising from China’s social and economic development so as to realize a more balanced development of higher education.
