Abstract: Preventing and resolving social conflicts in urban areas is an important part of the modernization of national governance system and governance capacity in the new era. Putian city in Fujian province has made a series of pilot practices relating to the prevention and resolution of social conflicts, formed a unique “Putian sample” and solved relevant social governance problems. The solutions mentioned in this paper to defuse conflicts and disputes in Putian are boiled down to the following six aspects, namely multiple mechanisms for resolving conflicts and disputes, grid-type-based multiple governance model for defusing conflicts and disputes, multiple mediation and cohesion system, multiple working patterns resolving traffic accident disputes with the assistance of related departments and based on related institutional guarantee mechanism, comprehensive management system for maintaining stability through handling people’s petitions expressed in letters or visits, and multiple working mode of resolving disputes involving overseas Chinese. These solutions are raised in a bid to provide valuable references for preventing and resolving social conflicts in other parts of China. In addition, this paper also proposes some countermeasures for addressing social governance issues in Putian city.
