Abstract: The Chinese government has taken major measures and overcome many difficulties in putting into effect the relocation of poor households from inhospitable areas. Up to now, some decisive progress has been achieved in poverty alleviation drive. Facts show that poor households have been relocated from inhospitable areas, and the living quality and development conditions of poor farmers have witnessed great improvement. With the moving out of poor farmers from inhospitable areas, the pressures on local resources and ecology has been relieved, scaled agricultural operation has been promoted and infrastructure construction in relocation areas has been improved to some extent. However, it should be noted that there are still some underlying problems remaining to be solved. 1. The raised living costs of relocated population have added uncertainties to their income increase. 2. A series of discomforts induced by centralized living need to be overcome. 3. Relevant institutional arrangements are yet to be enhanced. 4. Local debt risks are mounting. Based on the problems mentioned-above, we need to focus our efforts, after finishing the infrastructure projects and proper relocation work, on follow-up management in a comprehensive manner, summarize our experience in the relocation work and take targeted and precautious measures to respond to problems that might pop up in the future.
