Abstract: Mental health has a direct impact on the living quality of the elderly people as one’s health largely hinges on mental health. At present, the mental health of the elderly deserves our attention, and the issues relating to the mental health of the aged are mainly as follows. They have a low sense of happiness and many of them suffer from depression, frustration and loneliness and accordingly they are inclined to lose temper. Survey findings show that major reasons affecting the mental and physical health of the elderly are related to their health conditions, residential places, income level, and whether their children could often come to visit them and let them pour out their innermost feelings. In view of the increasing number of aging population, the government needs to take positive measures based on a strategic stance to address the population-aging issue, pay attention to the mental health of the elderly and earmark relevant financial appropriations on national mental health research and psychological health services for the elderly. In addition, the role of communities needs to be brought into full play in strengthening and supporting the supply of services for the mental health of the elderly and activities concerning the care for the mental health of the elderly need to be unfolded across the board. What’s more, the cultivation of personnel relating to mental health services needs to be enforced so as to underpin the development of social organizations engaged in mental health care and services.
