Abstract: As the focus of urban development in western China in line with the three horizontal and two vertical urbanization strategic patterns, Chengdu-Chongqing city clusters have entered a new development phase in the construction of Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle. At present, the structure of Chengdu-Chongqing City Clusters has taken an initial shape with increasing population gathering in Chengdu and Chongqing metropolitan areas, and people’s housing needs are well met and the burden of purchasing and renting houses is not too heavy. However, compared with other large city clusters such as those in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region, Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta, the urbanization level and competitive powers of Chengdu-Chongqing city clusters remain to be enhanced. Although notable achievements in housing provident fund integration have been made owing to the joint efforts made by Chengdu-Chongqing city clusters, the housing system relating to city clusters needs to be fleshed out for meeting the requirement of future development. Further work needs to be done to tackle the supply-side structural defects and regional imbalances in housing supply. Policy coordination in real estate market supervision needs to be strengthened and the types and locations of rental housing supply need to be optimized. For the next step, proactive efforts need to be made to adjust the structures of city clusters, promote housing supply, enhance the implementation of tailored policies for relevant cities, and intensify the coordination between urban planning and policy-making so as to push ahead with the coordinated development of housing system for city clusters.
