Research Report, No.334, 2021 (Total 6399) 2021-11-11

Abstract: The key to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in agricultural activities in China lies in reducing emissions through major sources. Efforts are needed to reduce methane emissions from intestinal fermentation of ruminant animals by improving feed and species, cut down methane emissions from rice cultivation by popularizing high-quality seeds and planting methods, reduce nitrous oxide emissions generated by farmland through scientific fertilization, lesson methane and nitrous oxide emissions through solid-liquid separation and scientific utilization of animal manure and decrease methane and nitrous oxide emissions by returning plant stalks to fields through biochemical decomposition. Agricultural energy conservation and emission reduction need to be driven through improving energy use efficiency and promoting the use of renewable energy. To achieve these goals, related departments need to adopt comprehensive measures including enhancing calculation and monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions in agricultural activities, promoting science and technology innovation with equal emphasis laid on improving the quality of agricultural products and reducing carbon emissions, strengthen incentives and constraints for agricultural producers, enhance the construction of a low-carbon social service system of the agricultural sector, strike a balance between ensuring self-sufficiency of agricultural products and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and guide the public to curtail food waste by following a rational and balanced diet.
